Question by sunshine222: Fashion magazine?
How hard do you think it is to work for a fashion magazine? Doesn’t matter which one, just a cool one like Vogue, Instyle, or well known magazines? Can you just love fashion to no end and go to school with a degree in writing or English and come out and work for a fashion magazine? I mean, I don’t see why a fashion magazine would be any different than any other magazine? I guess the demand to work for them is higher? Basically in a nutshell, I think it’s crazy to be your own designer cause its hard to get known so I wouldn’t waste my time in school for fashion design, but if its not incredibly hard to get a job at a fashion magazine, then I can combine my writing skills with fashion and I’d be great.

It really depends on what you want to do on a magazine: write/report, edit, design, take photos…
I think it’s like any other career: the more you put into it, the more successful you will be. Simply loving something — in this case, fashion — and being a decent writer does not guarantee you will make it in the publishing world — or at a fashion magazine. There are real skills that go into publishing a magazine. It’s not something that everyone can do and it’s not a field suited for everyone.
Publishing is a tough racket to get into no matter what. And, yes, there is a lot of competition in the fashion industry as well. I don’t think you should believe what they’re selling on “Ugly Betty”: I’m pretty sure that they want beautiful people — at least very fashionable people — working on their magazines. BUT if you have real passion for it and are determined and tenacious, of course you could get a job at a fashion magazine. The most important part would be knowing the industry well (keeping in mind, as with anything, who you know/networking is just as important as what you know) and being able to express what you know in written form (assuming that you’re interested in being a writer/reporter). Communication (and determination) is key.
Also, if you don’t already live there, it probably wouldn’t hurt to move to New York City.
